Now that the weather is getting better many people are anxious to get outside and start exercising or playing ball again. You’ll start to see lots of races and “fun runs” advertised which I think are great but my word of caution would be “not so fast.” In other words, if you’ve been working out indoors mostly over the winter you’d better make sure your body is prepared for the rigors of outdoor exercise or for whatever sport you’ll be playing. So if you’ve been riding a stationary bike or elliptical trainer but now want to start participating in these runs you’d better start incorporating running into your routine. Just start slowly and work your way up to your desired distance over the course of several weeks. Also remember to do complimentary exercises that cover the full range of your muscle movement during the activity, like how your arm needs to move backward before throwing a ball forward. If you stick to the exercise basics of cardio, flexibility, strength, and alignment and work your way gradually into your outdoor sport you should be able to enjoy it with a low risk for injury. Having an expert supervision is also helpful.
